Resident Evil 2 Remake

Hello, it's been a long time since we've posted anything (thank you busy work and personal life), but we thought we'd make a quick post sharing the news.

RESIDENT EVIL 2 IS GETTING A REMAKE.

"You’ve been telling us for years that you want Resident Evil 2 to be remade,” said Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabyashi, “and we haven’t been able to make it happen...until now.”

Not much is known yet, but check out the announcement video and cream yourself.

Favorite Horror Games [Work In Progress]

It being October, the month where the US (and most of the world after I Google'd) celebrates witchcraft, devil magic and other hoopla, I thought it'd be a great time to check out some of our favorite horror games, as well as some awesome upcoming ones.

First let's go over series' in general:

5. Fatal Frame

Now, I've only played ONE of the FF games, an atrocity I know, but it was a lot of fun and I've been wanting to play the others and been hoping for a next gen (last gen) game.

The first, and only FF game I played was Crimson Butterfly, I don't know about the other games, but playing as a little Japanese girl who is looking for her possessed twin in a burnt down old town is pretty damn scary. Not to mention the ghosts, who all are incredibly disturbing and pop up at the most terrible of times.

Nope....
Many of the ghosts have great individual personalities, by that I mean that they are not all copy/paste attack you until one of you is dead, type ghosts. There are many that are harmless (and those are the scariest), like the infamous 'Peeking Child', a child who died playing hide-and-seek, he just POPS OUT OF NOWHERE, scary little bastard....

Another bit I forgot about:
At one point on the second floor of the Tachibana house, there is a secret room/storeroom Mio can go into. Entering will trigger the sound of a girl saying "Help me" over and over again. When you peer through the camera, the otherwise blank walls have the same characters in Japanese written everywhere. Attempting to leave results in the door being locked. About two minutes inside leads to the voice fading and the door opening again. Nothing attacks you, and there is nothing in there. It's simply a room to freak you out.

There's one scene at the beginning of the game where Mio (twin #1) is standing in front of Mayu (twin #2), and you can only see Mio in the shot. Someone puts their hand on Mio's shoulder, and while not initially scary, you just see Mayu walk past her and the hand is still there!!!!

That's not her twins hand....

You can find a figure wrapped up in blankets sitting upright. Mio will wonder if it's a doll, but after you inspect it and walk away, you'll hear a distorted voice say "Stay with me..."

The game is also terrible at atmospheric sounds, and by terrible I mean amazing, just in a bad way. There's several parts that haunt my dreams still, the crawl space ghost, yeah, I've never been able to get into a small place thanks to that crap. Oh, how about the small closet (see a pattern?) where when you go in, you hear a neck snap (probably not so scary now, but when you're 9, that is terrifying)? Thanks, but....

If you haven't played this game, you can get it on the PS Store and the original Xbox version works on Xbox 360 (get the game for your region, US Fatal Frame for US Xbox 360, JP Fatal Frame for JP Xbox 360, etc).

4. Resident Evil

I've played most of the Resident Evil games, minus a few spin-offs and a GB game that will remain nameless and have, overall, enjoyed the games. While they aren't inherently scary any longer (due to several factors), when they first released, they were nightmare inducing games.

The very first zombie gamers see in the RE series, and the remake of the same zombie
Zombies are funny, you think a human would be able to easily outwit and outmaneuver a creatures whose basis for 'living' is to eat and can be brought down with a blunt object to the skull, yet somehow, they kill thousands of people,

The game probably wouldn't have been as scary had the camera been friendly. You could be staring down a hall but you wouldn't know if zombies were down there or not, unless you had aim assist on, then it was simple, the controls were terrible as well, thanks to the camera (see: Tank Controls).

Besides horrendous controls and camera (which at one point I did manage to master, I have since lost that mastery and cannot play older RE games effectively), there WERE enemies that would cause a grown man to cry and retreat to the fetal position.

The Tyrant

He's not initially scary, just a big black looking guy in a coat, nothing to be afraid of at all.

Tyrant in his jacket
However, once the jacket is destroyed or removed, he gains his full power (the jacket acting as a limiter) and he turns in to something far more threatening.

Tyrant without his jacket
The Tyrant is capable of killing the player in just a few attacks, as he has massive, sharp claws and lots of speed. He is the end boss for Resident Evil 1 and can only be killed with a Rocket Launcher. TO THE FACE (okay, not true, but highly advised).

Hunters

No one, and I mean no one, who has played a RE game will be unfamiliar with these guys. Hunter have many variations, generally having an amphibious look to them, and can range in scariness. They all, however, can easily kill the player if they aren't prepared, as they have plenty of health, a high attack and great speed.

Hunter Y
Hunter R
Hunter Alpha
Sweeper
All Hunters had a special 'kill move', most of them would leap and decapitate the player, the more frog like ones would wrap the player in their tongue and swallow them whole when the players health dropped low enough, because of this, they were highly dangerous.

Cerberus

click, click, click. An all to familiar sound filled the air, nails on tile, slow and steady, a low, wet growl, then repeated clicks, and there it was....

C-Dog
RE Fan Appreciation Fan Art

While they aren't very powerful alone, there is almost always more than one, this as well as their speed, make them in to a dangerous enemy. Cerberus can attack swiftly and retreat while the player recoils, so a quick trigger finger is needed to fend them off, luckily, they announce themselves well before attacking. So polite.

Lickers

This is the second enemy encountered in RE2 by Leon, Lickers are disturbingly pink, the muscle exposed due to the skin being torn and their brain IS EXPOSED (gross, yeah?). They posses extremely sharp claws, on par with the Hunter Alpha and can scale walls due to their small, light frame.

Licker, no special traits yet
The Licker could use its claws to kill you, but no, they prefer to reamin at a distance and use their freakishly mutated barbed tongue. They whip at the player and can decapitate them by wrapping the tongue around their preys neck and pulling. They remain nearly silent, with the occasional hiss sound they make when the detect prey.

Nemesis

If you've played RE3 at all, this guy is quite familiar. Nemesis is a type of Tyrant, but is more goal oriented, he seeks to eliminate all S.T.A.R.S. members. He is successful in killing Brad with his Licker like tentacle, He pursues Jill through Raccoon City for the entire game.

Oh, you'll just go to another area, you say? Yeah, he can follow you to another area. Did I mention he can use a friggin' ROCKET LAUNCHER?! No? Well, HE CAN USE A FRIGGIN' ROCKET LAUNCHER!!!!

FRIGGIN. ROCKET. LAUNCHER.
So not only can he follow you, but like other Tyrants, he 'evolves' after a certain point, making him much more deadly.

Crimsons

Probably the most terrifying enemy to me, these guys are reanimated zombies, think about that for a moment.... Okay. Good? They are terrifyingly powerful, fast, and look like an albino who spent far too much time in the sun.

Red skin, glowing eyes
And razor sharp claw-nails

Crimsons 'play dead' until the player gets close, once they do, they spring up and chase the player until one of you is dead. The have a lunge attack as well as vastly increased speed and attack power. Their groans are nightmare inducing and the sound of their footsteps will cause you to freeze in place.

Regenerador

I lied, these guys are equally as scary as the Crimsons, and the ONLY enemy from 'modern' Resident Evil that scares me. Regens are, as the name may imply, able to REGENERATE LOST BODY PARTS, EVEN THE HEAD. You could use a grenade and they would still come back, the only real way to kill them is to either use a Rocket or kill the plagas on their body (which are invisible to the naked eye, mind you).

The 'Iron Maiden'
BASK IN HIS GLORY
When you remove their legs, the tend to hop towards the player, if they get close enough, they latch on with their teeth and tear away at Leon. Truly, a more terrifying creature, I've never seen.

These are just some of the creatures that are scary, there are plenty of moments in the games where you either jump, piss yourself, or both. If you've not played the early entries, I suggest doing so.

If you have a current gen console, or last gen even, you can enjoy RE1 all over again shortly (see: Resident Evil 1 ReReMake)

3. Dead Space

Dead Space was probably my favorite survival horror series last gen, the atmosphere was creepy and dark, the enemies were disturbing and quick, did I mention it was dark? Most of the games are based on s space station full of alien creatures mercilessly killing anything and everything they find.

The series is so well received, it has two animated movies based off of it as well (both of which are amazing and on Netflix, last time I checked). I will say that most of the scares are 'jump scares', but are done infrequently enough that the player isn't always on the edge or expecting them. That's not to say that's all there is to the game, there are plenty of adrenaline filled moments that are scary by themselves.

Enemies are known as Necromorphs, an alien parasite that kills and transforms the host (usually human) in to a new species, as the name implies, they are of dead corpses. There are several varieties of Necros throughout the series.

Necromorphs

The part of the game that I love the most, is the gut churning death scenes. All enemies have a special way of killing the player, usually resulting in a bloody mess.

WARNING: NSFW

That's just the second game, there are plenty more to see in Dead Space 1 and 3. If gory deaths aren't enough, how about upgradable guns to prevent the gruesome results above? There are many guns to help fend of the Necromorphs.

Crawler, an EXPLODING BABY
Regenerator, able to replace lost limbs
Leaper, fast and can jump.... FAR.
Common Slasher
Dealing with Necromorphs may seem easy enough, shoot them, a lot, until they die. And you can, however it is much more effective to remove their limbs. You can shoot off legs to immobilize them, or their arms to make them less dangerous. Doing this can save you a lot of ammo.

If you haven't played Dead Space, you should. It is a fun, creepy, spine tingling experience, one of the first I had when I got my Xbox 360. And you can get ALL 3 for about $50 on Amazon.

2. Slenderman

If you've not yet heard of Slenderman, you've been under a rock for quite some time, I won't go in to the details of him, you can read about him on Wikipedia or other database sites

There are numerous games focused on this character, most, if not all, require the player to navigate an area and find pages, these are drawings with stuff scribbled on them. Why, I have no idea, I don't know the stories behind these games or the folklore, I honestly don't care about it (although I'm sure it is interesting).

Various pages from the game

The game is always in first person and requires you to move about a dark creepy area to find said pages. Sounds easy, and it is.... until you've collected a few of them, then HE comes after you. He, meaning Slenderman, is a tall, lanky creature with no facial features and, at times, long appendage like tentacles/wings.

Tentacle wings!!!! YAY

"I still don't see what's so scary." You may be asking, well, he randomly appears, the game mechanics make it so you could be looking down a hall, turn to look behind you, return to looking down the hall and BOOM, there he is, right in front of you.

The game also likes to fuck with you, while you are moving about, you may catch a glimpse of him in a forest, behind something or in the corner of your screen. Obviously, you freeze and look, only to see he's not there.

When you do look at him, the screen goes all staticy, snow, as us old folk may know it as, the longer you stare, the more static appears, if too much static is generated, you'll die (or I assume die, you get a game over).

Slenderman: The Arrival
The game isn't as scary as the others as it has only one enemy (some of the others may have more), but it's creep factor is high up there. Games such as Silent Hill always have a disturbing environment and psychological creepiness, this game just has you on the edge wondering WHEN he is gonna pop up.

As you can see, you're given a camcorder (which acts as the HUD and a small light which is attached to it. You must find the pages in order to escape, but if Slender finds you first, and he probably will, you die. Slenderman has a game for consoles as well, you can, and should, download it. Download for Xbox and Playstation on the PS Store.

Good Night

Resident Evil Revelations 2 to be Episodic

In what appears to be a continuing trend, the upcoming Resident Evil Revelations title will not be one entire game at launch. The sequel to Revelations will be featured in four episodes, each listing $5.99 as they are released in a weekly. If you get the Complete Season you will also get additional content on top of the episodes. If you're patient though you can get the entire series on a retail disc. This version includes even more content on top of the additional content offered in the Complete Season deal and will go for $39.99 retail.

Capcom has stated that the game's storyline will take place between Resident Evil 5 and 6. Capcom also released a statement that Revelations 2 will include additional gameplay modes within the episodes aside from the story (here's hoping Raid Mode returns).

No release date has yet been confirmed.

Next Resident Evil Game to Star Returning Female Lead, Plus One New Character

If you're a fan of the Resident Evil series (for what it is or was), you may be interested in knowing that the new Revelations game will star our old friend Claire Redfield, who was last seen in the Arctic back in 2000 in Code Veronica. But that's not all, a new face will be joining the fray as well, if you don;t already know, see if you can guess who she is:

Moira Burton
Yep, you read that caption right, Moira Burton, daughter of Jill Sammich lovin' Barry Burton.

Not much detail has been released about the game, but the devs are aiming to create a game that is more horror based than it's predescor (whether they are referring to JUST Revelations or the series has a whole is not known), and it will feature co-op play as the previous game did, so if you were hoping for more Resident Evil 2 and less Resident Evil 5, well, sorry.

‘I want this to be both a game that doesn't lose what made its predecessor great, while also bringing something new and exciting to the Resident Evil series, achieving that lofty goal by bringing together past and future will make this an itchy-tasty prospect indeed.’

Okabe, the games producer, has stated that the two play different roles, Claire, being the badass veteran she is, is primarily focused on combat, where Moira is 'support', how that will effect co-op is not known.

Resident Evil: Revelations 2 will release on Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4 and PC early next year.

If you haven't already read the article, you can do so here: Resident Evil ReReMake coming to Xbox One, PS4 and last gen consoles

Some screenshots have emerged that show off the beautiful environments and changes, click them to see the goodness.

While I haven't played the NGC remake in 10+ years, these are looking very beautiful. I cannot wait for this remake to actually launch.

Resident Evil: ReReMake coming to PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One

Remember back in 2002 when Capcom remade the original Resident Evil? It was pretty sweet, a great move by Capcom and Nintendo, I ran out and bought that on day one, seeing as how I never beat the original. Well, now Capcom will be doing it again, bringing one of the greatest RE (RE3 being the best, in my opinion) games back from the dead.... again.

RE:ReReM (short for Resident Evil: ReReMake) will be given a nice new coat of paint, a boost to 1080p for both the Xbox One and PS4, it will also support 5.1 surround sound, 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios as well as include the god awful original control scheme (not to be confused with the camera scheme) as well as the modern scheme. It will NOT be making it's way over to the Wii U.

In producer Hirabyashi's own words:
"We have been very careful to preserve the original atmosphere of the game and are ensuring that no unnecessary changes will be made. The tempo and flow of the original game are an inherent part of its scary atmosphere so we have made the decision not to disrupt this tempo."
The glorious re(re)make will be available early 2015.

The Death of A Series

So it's been forever since I've posted anything (Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year), and after seeing a certain game on sale for $20, I thought I'd make another little opinion post.

As many know, I love the Resident Evil series, or what it used to be. It brings me great joy to say that RE6 was a huge flop, it sold at least 1,000,000 (one million) less than RE5 and has recieved mixed to bad reviews. Capcom took a big hit both financially and creditibilty wise. While I have never been happy to see a game fail, I am oddly satisfied by the failure of Resident Evil 6. Why? Let me list the reasons:

- Obviously, it deviates from what made the series great
- They are trying to appeal to the mindless fans that flock to the CoD series (yep, I'm a CoD hater too)
- They ignore true fans and give us crappy shit like Leon's Story, which is just god awful
- They haven't even bothered to REmake RE2 and RE3, which are the best in the series, but will make this crap without a second thought

Destructoid said it best, 'not just a step back for the series, it's a step back for commonplace, unassuming action-shooters' This is still an understatement, I will set it straight,

'This is a step back for both the [Resident Evil] series and any shooter in general. What's worse is that Capcom doesn't care, fans have made their desires clear, they want a reboot, a return to what made the series famous, yet they do nothing and only appeal to the mindless 12 yr olds that flock to the FPS genre.'

Feel free to use this if you want, I encourage it.

While you're at it, sign the petition to get RE2 remade. The devs have seen it, and have even hinted that if enough support is given, they'd strongly support making it. REmake Resident Evil 2 also, try signing this one, maybe if we get people to sign both we can get their attention REstore Resident Evil

Resident Evil 4HD

What do you get when you take Resident Evil and remove the zombies, the puzzle solving and the general sense of fear and dread? This.

Story

Leon Kennedy, one of the most renowned survivors of the Raccoon City incident in 1996/7, has become a government agent working with various types of top security information and receiving orders directly from the President of the United States. What is Leon’s goal this time, preventing nuclear war, rescuing a valuable P.O.W, assassinating a dangerous dictator? No, none of these…. Well, somewhat, but no. Leon is given the task of rescuing the President daughter, Ashley, who was kidnapped by a mysterious organization.

Unfortunately for Leon, when he arrives in a town that looks like it was taken from ‘The Lottery’, things go awry and the villagers begin attacking Leon and he is forced to take them out in Super Secret Agent fashion. Not far into the story, Leon learns that the village is not just full of angry Euros and that something much more sinister is going on.

Graphics

The game is titled Resident Evil HD, so you would believe the graphics are going to be better than those seen on previous consoles. While they do look better, they aren’t anything to get excited about. Yes they look better, but I didn't even see the difference till I searched Google for a comparison, and honestly it wasn't a huge difference, the hair seemed a bit more highlighted giving the layered effect. I digress though, the game looks pretty good for a game that originally came out in…. 2006 (too lazy to Wiki the release date), although the game does have a sort of ‘static’ overlay to it.

Controls

If you've played an over the shoulder shooter, then you likely know the controls already, as this game helped cement them, it does all the right things right and the wrong things right as well. The controls are very simplistic and easy to learn while giving you plenty of options and allow you to interact with the environment (although not to the same levels as RE5 or RE6). You don’t have a quick select like you do in the predecessors, so you’ll have to go into your inventory to equip something or use an item, but all in all, it’s easy to use and causes no real issues (in-fact I prefer this, if you make a mistake in RE5/6, you may die, panicking to grab an herb from the hotwheel and you end up pulling out an egg….).

Other

As far as extras, you get Mercenaries and a mission where you get to play as Ada Wong where you must collect a sample of the Las Plagas (which were included in all versions of the game). You can also earn some outfits from the PS2/WII/PC versions, one being Leon’s mobster outfit (looks more like a priest to me) and Ashley’s armor, which is invaluable as it makes her invincible and unable to be carried away by the villagers, so Hard mode is stupidly easy.

There’s also a Separate Ways campaign, which was only PS2, Wii and PC versions, this scenario is significantly longer than Assignment Ada and shows how some of the items ended up being where they are in Leon’s scenario (the main game).

Overall

For those that enjoyed Resident Evil 4 when it originally launched, then this will be a good dose of nostalgia for you. If you haven’t played it and enjoyed Resident Evil 5/6, then yes, pick this up as it is what changed the series to what it is now. If you’re like me and like the series for what it USED to be, this is still worth picking getting, just don’t think of it as Resident Evil. The game is a good suspenseful shooter, but a terrible Resident Evil game.

8.0/10.0 (if you don’t count it as a Resident Evil game)
4.0/10.0 (if you count it as a Resident Evil game)

Pros:

- New content (if you had the GameCube version of the game)
- A fun game, despite not staying true to the name
- Luis!!!! He’s just awesome

Cons:

- Shooting Gallery is a bitch!!!!
- Ruined the rest of the series (for me)
- Ashley…. Nobody likes her, nobody.

Operation Raccoon City

Ever wonder what might happen if you played as a member of Umbrella's Security team during the outbreak? Well, now you can finally find out.

Story

Many likely know the story of how the various characters in the RE universe came to be, about the mysterious outbreak in a small mountain town in middle America, how the outbreak caused its victims to come back from the dead and wander aimlessly, and how a pharmaceutical company, Umbrella was behind it all. But what if the story was told through the eyes of Umbrella's private Security Service? What would have been different? Well, with this game, you get to glimpse (notice I said glimpse) as to what may have happened. You are tasked with erasing all evidence of Umbrella's involvement, any and everything, must be destroyed.

Graphics

The graphics on ORC are.... well, they aren't the greatest, but I've certainly seen worse. Some textures have a  overly shiny coating of blood/slime/water/whatever, making them look poorly added (sorta like in old school cartoons when something that was going to be interacted with always stood out opposed to everything else in the show). Characters, however, look very nice, I never knew that Nicholai had a scar until now. But there are a few exceptions, if you played Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, the Nemesis in the game looks.... crappy, he looks more like the movie version. The difference?

RE:ORC
RE3

You can clearly see that ORC's Nemesis has a much fatter head, and while that not matter to some, being an Old School RE fan makes me very biased, I love the RE3 version, I hate, HATE, the RE:ORC/Movie version and wish he would jump off a cliff into the rectum of Hell and die.... repeatedly.

Controls

The controls work pretty much the same as any shooter these days, various items are assigned to the D-Pads (grenades, first-aid sprays, special skills, etc), B is used for melee and, if timed correctly (when playing online this is almost impossible), pressing A allows for a special instant kill (which is completely BS in my opinion). The long awaited ability to shoot and move can be done simply by holding the left trigger (aim) and right trigger (shooting), although this does little, as you move slow as shit.

Voice/Music/Sound

The voice work is rare, but when it's present, it's well done. The characters don't talk much, and when they do, it's usually a few lines in regards to something about the objective. There's infrequent music, usually present during high risk situations, and other times there's a low dark tone, nothing special music wise stands out in this installment, although this has always been true and probably a good thing, considered you're dealing with hordes of the undead (I mean, do you want some K-Pop crap playing while you're trying to fend off a Tyrant? I know I don't).

Other

There are 6 playable characters, each having a unique area of expertise.

Bertha, the Medic (can hold up to 4 first-aid sprays in stead of just one, can nulfy 90% of damage for 10sec)
Lupo, the Leader (has incendiary rounds, effective against the undead, faster reloading)
Vector, the Reconnaissance Man (turns invisible and runs fast as shit, nuff said)
Four Eyes, the Field Scientist (can induce zombifacation, start with a anti-virus vaccine)
Spectre, the Marksman (can detect items and enlarge mini-map, good for those trying to find as many items as possible for S+)
Beltway, the Explosives Expert (can use various explosives such as trip mines and takes less damage from explosions)

*These skills must be unlocked using exp earned in story or versus, not all abilities listed.

This game puts tremendous focus on Multiplayer, this is god and bad.... but mostly bad. The online VS is HORRIBLE. I have a great connection, never have any issues, but when I play this.... my god, I see players lag so hard, teleporting from one place to another, dodging melee attacks and killing you then teleporting again. You may get into a game that has no issues, and if you do, stay with that group, the last thing you want to do is leave and connected with some fuck who has shit-tastic connectivity and makes you wanna rage quit.

There are several Modes to play in VS.

Heroes - You play as a icon from the RE series (Leon, Claire, Carlos, Jill, Ada, HUNK, Nicholai and Lone Wolf (whoever the fuck he is....)) and try to kill the opposing teams Heroes.

Team Attack - Straight up Death Match.... sorta. Earn points for killing zombies, but more for killing Lickers, Hunters and other players. You get to pick from the USS team and the Spec Op team consisting of Willow, Dee-Ay, Tweed, Harley, Shona and Party Girl. They have the same powers as the USS, just different looks/name.

Survivor - A chopper is coming to carry you to safety! But there's only 4 seats on said chopper, so if you can't get to it before it's full, you die. Simple. Survive zombies, hunters and enemy players (and even your own team) if you want to live.

Biohazard - Collect samples of the G-Virus and bring them back to your safe zone, only problem is zombies are drawn to these samples and will chase you when you carry them.

The campaign MP is a different story, it's enjoyable and well executed. In fact, if you want to finish some of the levels on Pro, you NEED to have a partner, otherwise you'll have a helluva hard time. It's welcome as well, seeing as how the CPU is dumb as shit and will walk right in front of you, causing friendly fire, not heal, run right up to the enemy and die, or in rare cases, stop functioning altogether.

Overall

This can be a fun Resident Evil game to tide players over till 6 comes out, but if you aren't a big RE fan, you may want to hold off for a price drop (or at least some patches).

7.0/10.0

Pros

- The playable characters are great
- Fun "what-if" game for RE fans
- Actually is quite challenging at high difficulties

Cons

- Shitty AI
- VS is unbalanced as hell and laggy
- Very short (a few hours if you aren't exploring, but there isn't much to explore even if you do)
