Silent Hills Officially CANCELLED

UPDATE #2: Konami has told Kotaku the following information:

Konami is committed to new Silent Hill titles, however the embryonic ‘Silent Hills’ project developed with Guillermo del Toro and featuring the likeness of Norman Reedus will not be continued.

In terms of Kojima and Del Toro being involved, discussions on future Silent Hill projects are currently underway, and please stay tuned for further announcements.

UPDATE: Norman Reedus has confirmed that the game is indeed cancelled via Twitter. It’s officially over.

So if you've not heard of "Silent Hills", it was set to be the next Silent Hill entry from Hideo Kojima (Metal Gear) and Guillermo Del Toro (famed horror producer), featuring Norman Redus (The Walking Dead's Daryl) as the main character. A Playable Teaser (named P.T.) was releases last year and blew gamers away with it creep factor.

Sadly, due to Kojima's contract expiring, and other issues, the game has been officially canned by Konami.

Silent Hills was set to release later this year, on the PS4 and possibly the Xbox One.

Norman Reedus to be Main Character in upcoming Kojima Game

If you were to ask me, "Andrew, what are two of the most horror related things you enjoy?" I could give you a few answers, like the thought of Warner Bros bringing back The Matrix, love the triology, but would be hesitant about its revival, or the idea of another Resident Evil movie (or game that's NOT a remake), fun to think about how they would destroy the series even more.

Eventually, though, we'd come to The Walking Dead and Silent Hill.

Both series' are pretty damn fun (yes, even Downpour), so what if you combined them? Well, this may be the closest we'll get.

Norman Reedus.... except it's not....
The above picture comes from the interactive demo titled 'PT'. As you can see, that IS Norman Reedus (aka Daryl, from The Walking Dead), if he was rendered and put into a game/CG movie.

The interactive demo is short and in first person, never giving you a look at who you are (for obvious reasons now, it's much funner to find out at the very end). As Norman looks at us with his very attractive man face, a title card fades in, "Silent Hills". If you are observant, you noticed the 's' in that, what exactly that means, I know not.

"How can you say this is Silent Hill then?" You ask. Good question.

The game is the result of Hideo Kojima (yes of Metal Gear fame) who has long been suspected of being in charge of the next Silent Hill game. He, along with Hellboy Guillermo Del Toro, are working together to create a suspenseful horror game, plus I'm sure there would be legal action against Kojima using 'Silent Hills' if it weren't okay with Keiichiro Toyama.

There have been no announcements as to which consoles it will be avaailble on, it is safe to assume PS4, as that is where the demo made its debut, and as the game is running the Fox engine, I'd suspect the Xbox One as well. Other than that, not much is yet known, so stay tuned for more Daryl/Silent Hill goodness.

EDIT: This has actually been confirmed to be the next Silent Hill game. So huzzahs are in order!!!!

The Future of Silent Hill

So I've been playing older Xbox 360 games I have yet to finish and one of those is Silent Hill: Downpour. I love Silent Hill and just did some random Google'ing and became curious if another was in the works. Upon looking at the Silent Hill Wikia, I came across Silent Hill 9 (generic name) and saw that it was indeed a planned title, but that the Producer was also none other than Hideo Kojima, of Metal Gear fame. The following quote was also provided:
Honestly, I'm kind of a scaredy-cat when it comes to horror movies, so I’m not confident I can do it. At the same time, there’s a certain type of horror that only people who are scared of can create, so maybe it’s something I can do.
That said, I think Silent Hill has a certain atmosphere. I think it has to continue, and I’d love to help it continue, and if I can help by supervising or lending the technology of the FOX Engine, then I’d love to participate in that respect.
So that got me thinking, what type of shenanigans would Kojima incorporate in the Silent Hill franchise were he to take over for a few games? I'd love to see a few nods to Metal Gear (maybe something like a cutscene where the player hides in a box to avoid being seen by the antagonist (i.e. pyramid head or whoever), or a few old magazines that have Naked Snake (or any Snake) on the cover, something simple). As long as he didn't flood the game with MGS references, I'd love it.

Oh, and another thing, Kojima MUST bring his composers, I didn't HATE David Licht but Korn was a terrible choice for Downpour, I'd prefer Akira to come back, but I doubt he'd be interested.

Anyways, just a few ramblings. :3

Silent Hill Origins

Every story begins somewhere.

Story

The game takes place 'several years' before the first game (on the PlayStation), with Travis trying to make up time during his delivery by cutting through a small town know as Silent Hill. While driving, the road becomes foggy and he barely avoids hitting a girl in the road. When he gets out looking for her, he is follows the young girl until he loses her but comes across a burning building.

Travis runs in to see if anyone’s inside, after traversing the burning house, he finds a girl with 3rd degree burns over most, if not all, of her body, he manages to rescue her before passing out and then waking up in the town of Silent Hill.

Gameplay

The game plays like many of the Silent Hill entries before, focusing on puzzles with elements of survival-horror. You'll spend much of your time searching for the next piece of a puzzle while avoiding or fighting demented and warped creatures of Travis' mind.

The camera switches between static and moving, at some points, generally in small rooms, the camera is fixed into a certain position. When in larger rooms or halls the camera is behind Travis and can be manipulated with the shoulder buttons.

Combat is pretty over-simplified, the left shoulder locks on to enemies while X allows you to attack (or can be held for power attacks). Weapons have slightly different speeds, meaning you'll have to use a bit of strategy for some enemies (obviously, if the enemy is fast, a big sledgehammer is not a wise choice).

Graphics

The graphics are pretty good for a slightly older game. Being Silent Hill, the game adopts the old fashioned screen effects such as static when an enemy is near and grain effects. Environments are decently detailed as are the characters. Lighting is done very well and gives the game a very dark feeling.

The game can be given a much darker appearance via brightness

Controls, Voice, Audio and Music

The controls are quite simplistic, as there aren't many buttons on a PSP and will be learned quite quickly. The voice work ranges from acceptable to cheesy, which seems to be a staple for the earlier installments, so I'm not sure if it was intended or not.

The audio, when it's there, is well done, lending an ominous vibe to the area around Travis. Small movements can cause large amounts of noise when you're walking down a dark and empty hall. The music is very well done, as Akira Yamaoka was the composer, so I would expect nothing less from him. The music picks up heavily when Travis has what he needs to confront the areas boss, and altering when Travis enters the Otherworld.

Overall

This is a great addition to the series, and if you're a fan, I highly suggest giving it a try.

8.5/10.0

Pros

+ Great music score
+ Well executed game overall
+ Chilling feeling for much of the game

Cons

- Voice work is laughable in some areas
- Camera is sometimes uncooperative
- The combat seems lacking and not very in-depth outside of minute 'strategy'
